Who was Bhagatji Maharaj?

Bhagatji Maharaj, also known as Pragji Bhakta, was a revered saint of the Swaminarayan tradition. He was born in 1829 in Mahuva, Gujarat and is known for spreading the philosophy of Akshar-Purushottam taught by his guru

He is famous for spreading the spiritual understanding that Aksharbrahman and Purushottam are distinct eternal realities and for openly declaring his guru as the manifestation of Akshar.

Bhagatji Maharaj was the devoted disciple of Gunatitanand Swami, whom he believed to be the manifest form of Aksharbrahman.

He preached the Akshar-Purushottam philosophy, which teaches that:

  • God (Purushottam) is supreme.

  • Aksharbrahman is the eternal ideal devotee and abode of God.

  • Spiritual seekers should become aksharrup and worship Purushottam.

He was born in the town of Mahuva in Gujarat, India.

Before becoming widely known as a saint, he worked as a carpenter while living a deeply devotional life.

One of his most famous disciples was Shastriji Maharaj, who later established the Akshar-Purushottam doctrine institutionally.

His teachings inspired the formation of BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, which continues to spread the Akshar-Purushottam philosophy worldwide.

Bhagatji Maharaj passed away on 7 November 1897 after a lifetime of devotion, service, and spiritual guidance.

His teachings focused on:
